My Love for the Yuletide

Pototan derived its name from the word “putat” or “kaputatan” which means “ a place of many Putat trees”. It is a 1st class municipality located in the 3rd district of Iloilo. Through the years, Pototan have grown to be one of the most visited municipality in Iloilo especially during Christmas. To grow up in a town which serves as the Christmas Lights capital of Iloilo is quite an honor. As a child, different sparkling colors can be very attractive. As for me, I find it magical, that is why up until now, the Christmas season is something that I always look forward to. 

Some people my age says that the yuletide season seems different from when we were kids than now. I agree with them. Back then, you can already feel the excitement as early as September. Sure, you can already hear the joyous songs of Jose Marie Chan or Mariah Carey that month but somehow it feels off and different. Well, I just took that as growing up and even so, I still can’t shake the excitement in my heart during this season. It’s that one memory in my childhood that I have treasured the most. I remember me and my father attending the opening of the Iwag Festival and even if there’s a lot of people and even if we’re starving, no one can stop us from waiting for the fireworks display.

 Of course eating liempo or pantat for dinner is one of the highlights of those evenings and after that, my father can only scratch his head because I want to ride all the rides possible and play all the “games” in the carnival. It was always a routine back in the day. Well, actually, even if I’m staying in the city, every December 16, I always try to go home to Pototan so that we can continue that tradition. But this time, my father and I doesn’t just share meal. Now that I’m more or less a grown up, we enjoy deep conversations in between our meals and a bottle or two of San Miguel Pale Pilsen after that. I guess some things do change, but it’s not all bad.
